Welcome to The Southerly Way
The South has never been just one story. Neither are we.
launching 09.01.26
The Southerly Way is a digital publication about the people, places, and stories across the South, and the ways they’re shaping what it’s becoming.
We’ll follow the history hiding behind places you thought you knew, meet the people carrying old traditions forward and those creating entirely new ones. We’ll look at what the South grows, cooks, pours, builds, paints, preserves and occasionally leaves sitting beside the highway for the rest of us to wonder about. And sometimes, we’ll simply show you somewhere worth going.
Some stories will look backward. Others are being written right now. Some will take us to places everybody knows and ask us to look again. Others may send us down a road we hadn't planned to take.
People worth knowing.
Places that matter.
Stories worth telling.
That’s The Southerly Way.
Deeply Rooted. Ever Evolving.
The Road Ahead
Over our first month, The Southerly Way will explore a technicolor paradise built by a preacher-turned-artist and visit a family farm where looking backward may be the way forward. We’ll wander Beaufort’s waterfront and dig into the history beyond the Spanish moss, find out how Chattanooga gave the South a MoonPie, and stop to explain why there is a 56-foot chicken in Georgia.
Help Us Find the Next Story
We don’t expect to find all the good stories ourselves. You know the people, places, traditions and oddities worth a closer look.
Tell us where we should eat, what we should see, who we should meet and what we should investigate. Nominate a Southern Sole, share something you’ve seen in the South, or make the case for the person who makes the pie, pours the drink or does something better than anybody else.
Know something we should know? Tell us.
